 Iganga municipal council has two divisions i.e. central and northern division with a total projected population of 66,400 persons.

 Iganga Municipal council has both government and private for profit and private clinics providing both curative and preventive services to the community of Iganga Municipal Council.  They are distributed evenly in Central and Northern Division.

 However private clinics in the Municipality are many and have high volume clients (patients) but are not reporting to the municipal council and yet they are offering a service to the people of Iganga Municipal council and yet we are encouraging the public private partnership.

 PRIORITIES FOR THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT – IGANGA MUNICIPAL COUNCIL

 Achievements

  • Partial construction of a storied building at Iganga Municipal Council HC III.
  • Have managed to continuously handle both preventive and curative services at the facilities.
  • Completion of OPD at Prisons HC II.
  • Timely supply of essential drugs to health facilities.
  • Have been able to visit schools, households and business premises with the aim of educating and sensitizing on hygiene and sanitation.
  • Some illegal waste dumping sites were closed e.g. Iganga MC HC III area, Ngobi road junction, moonlight site and water tank area.
  • There has been timely payment of wages to garbage collectors and staff available
  • Rehabilitation and renovation of Iganga Municipal Council HC III.
  • Fencing of Prisons HC II
  • Rehabilitation of Walugogo HC II.
  • Rehabilitation and maintenance of garbage trucks.

Challenges

  • Insufficient essential medicines due to overwhelming population from neighboring sub counties.
  • Municipal council has no final dumping site for garbage.
  • Inadequate political support and involvement in garbage collection
  • Inadequate pay of garbage collectors..
  • Breakdown of garbage ferrying vehicles in the municipality.
  • Poor enforcement mechanism i.e. no municipal council courts.
  • Poor business planning, illegal kiosks causing congestion hence interfering with routine town cleaning.
  • Unhealthy political statements from higher offices leading to interference in daily activities.
  • Poor drainage system in the market.
  • Inadequate funds and resource for effective implementation of activities.
  • Old garbage trucks which break down all time.
  • Poor drainage system in Iganga Municipal Council.
  • Inadequate structures to handle the overwhelming populations from the neighbouring sub-counties.
  • A bad mindset of the community in the municipality.

 Recommendation

  • Involve politicians and communities in planning and controlling garbage in the municipal council.
  • Allocate more revenue funds for health department.
  • Intensify sensitization of the community health related issues.
  • Procurement of new garbage trucks and spare some money to maintain the existing garbage trucks.
  •  Lobby for more essential medicines for the health facilities.

Future plans 

  • Elevation of Iganga Prisons HC II to HC III.
  • Construct accommodation for staff.
  • Accreditation of Nakavule HC II to government facility.
  • Construction of maternity wing at Iganga Prisons HC II.
  • Completion of a storied structure to cater for immunization, ART and ANC wing and Inpatient at Iganga Municipal Council HC III
  • Provide water and electricity services to Prisons HC II
